Jesus' Yoke and Burden

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

“labor”

1.  labor, work, give effort (Lk 5:5; Mt 6:28);

2. be tired, grow weary (Mt 11:28; Jn 4:6);

3. lose heart, be emotionally fatigued and discouraged (Rev 2:3)

 

“heavy laden”

cause to carry – Lk. 11:46; Mt. 23:4. (passive) to be burdened, be loaded down (Mt 11:28) [i.e., burdened by someone else's decision]

Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

“yoke”

1. yoke, frame for draft animals, used for pulling and labor (Mt 11:29, 30; Ac 15:10) – cf. Lk 11:46

2. balance scale (Rev 6:5);

3. be slave to someone / something (Gal 5:1; 1Ti 6:1)

4. load down with obligations, formally, place yoke on the neck (Ac 15:10)

 

“gentle”

(used only 4x in NT; 3x in Mt)

Secular Gk. “friendliness” vs rough, hard, or violent in relationship -- (“This is an active attitude and deliberate acceptance, not just a passive submission.”)

 

“lowly in heart”

1. downhearted, downcast, timid, lacking in hope (2Co 7:6)

 2. humble, unpretentious (Mt 11:29);

3. lowly, humble of status (Lk 1:52; Ro 12:16);

4. gentle, meek, mild, implying low social standing (2Co 10:1; Jas 1:9; 4:6; 1Pe 5:5)

 

“rest for your souls”

1. stop, not cease (Rev 4:8);

2. rest, become physically refreshed as result of resting from work (Mt 11:29; Rev 14:11);

3. place to rest, adj. location for resting (Mt 12:43; Lk 11:24);

4. relief, from anxiety and trouble (Mt 11:29; Rev 14:11) à Psa 73:16-17

“easy”

1. good, superior for particular purpose or use (Lk 5:39);

2. (morally) good (1Co 15:33);

3. kind, loving, gracious (Lk 6:35; Ro 2:4; Eph 4:32; 1Pe 2:3);

4. easy, pertaining to what is pleasant, implying suitability (Mt 11:30)

 

“light”

1. light, not burdensome, light of weight (Mt 11:30);

2. limited, light, not intense (2Co 4:17);

3. easy, not difficult to bear (Mt 11:30)
